Book Review: BEAUTIFUL BASTARD by Christina Lauren

Rating:
3 (ish) / 5 stars

Genre:
New Adult / 18+

An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling.

Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He's exacting, blunt, inconsiderate—and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.

Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family's massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who'd been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative—completely infuriating—creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he's never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe's so tempting he's willing to bend the rules—or outright smash them—if it means he can have her. All over the office.

As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they're willing to lose in order to win each other.

Originally only available online as The Office by tby789—and garnering over 2 million reads on fanfiction sites—Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for re-release.

BEAUTIFUL BASTARD is about a 26 year old intern named Chloe who works for Bennett Ryan aka "Mr. Beautiful Bastard" himself. The two absolutely cannot stand each other, but are both driven to accomplish their work in a timely and professional matter - until the two hook up in the conference room one evening.

Though Chloe and Bennett are constantly at each others throats one minute, they seemed to be on top of each other a split second later. Things start to progress throughout the book as both of them realize their feelings might be more than just a casual hookup.

This book is really difficult to review because I kind of have a love/hate relationship with it. Even though I read the book is less than 48 hours, the first half of it was really hard to get through.
Chloe and Bennett couldn't be in the same room without having sex. The first few sex scenes were great to read, but it seemed that every chapter had a 2-5 page sex scene.  I found myself skimming through them quickly just to get to the next part.
Like, I seriously felt like I became Britney Spears during her Hit Me Baby, One More Time music video as she was waiting for the bell to ring... only I was waiting for the sex scene to be over with.

I also found it really hard to connect with the characters at first. I just couldn't relate to them.
Chloe seemed to have an obsession with buying expensive panties that Bennett just loved to rip off
(literally) before they had sex. I looked up the prices of the brands they mentioned, and I would never pay $100-$200 for a pair (hell, I think VS is expensive though lol!)!

She was also VERY indecisive.  She's a very strong willed and stubborn woman, but has absolutely NO backbone when Bennett was around. She would tell her friend she's done with him, and then Bennett shows up at the location their at, and BAM - another sex scene.  Her attitude as well was kind of annoying and hard to read. I wanted to smack her sometimes!

Bennett, like Chloe, is not only a very strong willed and stubborn man, but he is a complete dick most of the time.  If someone talked to me the way he talked to Chloe... that someone would have no man part left. He may be 'beautiful', but good looks don't excuse that foul mouth of his.

The thing that saved this book from being any less than a 3 star rating, was the last quarter of the book.

After they left for a business trip, they both started acting like adults, instead of a young couple in high school. It was only then that I felt more connected with the two, and they actually began to grow on me. I started to root for the Chloe and Bennett because you could actually feel the chemistry the
y had when they weren't just having sex.

Also, I would've liked to learn more about the characters themselves. I felt like there wasn't enough information or a backstory of the two to feel like I knew them.

Needless to say, this book was a pretty decent and quick read. I liked how everything came together at the end, and I wasn't left with wanting more (aside from backstories to get to know them better). I was a little disappointed that this book didn't meet my expectations from all the hype about it.. but I will be willing to try the others in the series some time in the future.
