Wow! I was blown away with this read! I was dark and beautiful, and somehow innocent and full of light all in one and unlike anything I have ever picked up before.
It is written in third person and dual POV. Third person perspective isn’t always my favorite so I had a slow start getting into it, but after a chapter or two I couldn’t put it down. I became so eager for new information, trying to put all the pieces together.
We don’t have to wait long to get what Lucy is, and I loved having her mystery exposed early on, rather than dragged out throughout the whole story. It opened this book up to being about so much more. Sublime has its supernatural tones, obviously, but don’t be fooled. This is a love story through and through. The kind that wields a different kind of magic of devotion and obsession and longing, which I think is rare and hard to find in YA. I’m not entirely sure if that’s a good or bad thing for young readers, as I fear it may send the wrong messages, but this story was beautiful either way.
I loved Lucy and Colin and all of the secondary characters as well. It has all of the serious moments, but it has humor and sarcasm too, which was refreshing throughout this heavy book, to have some comedic relief. Lucy was great. I loved that she tried and wanted to do the right thing, and yet her own desires clouded that judgment, and even still you had a hard time viewing her as selfish.
Sublime shows us two young people who fall fast and hard in an inexplicable way and face these unimaginable odds to find a way to stay connected. At times I found myself thinking, this is too much, these kids are nuts. But then I think it wasn’t so long ago that I was 16 or 17 and crazy in love either. That kind of love that is just all consuming, and takes over everything including reason and good sense. That’s exactly what this is, to the extreme.
I mean Lucy and Colin really turn up the heat, and while you’re reading it you know it’s not the healthiest of situations, but yet you can’t help but root for them and what you hope they can share. They are intense and steamy and reach into your heart and really twist.
“Is it dangerous to want so much to know someone without first knowing yourself?”
The ending is flawless. I don’t know if it’s what you’d call a “happy ending”. I think that all depends on the perspective of the reader, but I think it’s a perfect ending. One that shouldn’t be spoiled, because it’s a definite “moment” for the reader to experience. It leaves things in a beautifully dark way that’s really up to you to interpret how you want. Realistically, it could be a tragic…..or you could be beautiful. I’m going to choose the latter because Lucy and Colin deserve a beautiful ending, and though I really didn’t expect it, it was flawless.
All in all Christina Lauren have done it again, creating an amazing world that sucked me in and held me tight all the way to the end!
